The Inspiration & The Complete Rewrite

If you have been in the Sketch ecosystem for a while, you might remember a brilliant legacy tool called Symbol Organizer created by the developer sonburn. We used his fantastic original concept as the core inspiration for this release.

However, modern design tools require modern architecture. To ensure flawless performance, we completely rewrote the entire codebase from scratch. By stripping away outdated Objective-C bridges and rebuilding it using the modern Sketch JS API, the new Symbols Sorter is lightning-fast, highly optimized, and fully compatible with the absolute latest Sketch Athens release. It seamlessly supports Apple’s Metal rendering engine, guaranteeing zero legacy crashes and a buttery-smooth experience.

When you are building massive UI kits or design systems, manually aligning hundreds of symbols into a readable grid is a tedious chore. The Sketch Symbols Sorter takes your chaotic canvas and instantly transforms it into a perfectly aligned, mathematically precise grid based entirely on your naming conventions.

Here is what the Sketch Symbols Sorter can do for your workflow:

• Smart Grouping by Name: The plugin reads your component names using the standard / divider (e.g., Button / Primary / Hover). You can set the "Group Definition" depth in the settings, and the plugin will automatically cluster related symbols together on the canvas.
• Alphabetical Layer List: True organization isn't just visual. The plugin automatically sorts your Sketch Layer List in perfect alphabetical order, making it incredibly easy to find assets in the left sidebar.
• Customizable Grid Layouts: Whether you prefer your components stacked horizontally or flowing vertically down the page, you have full control. You can also define the exact X and Y pixel padding between individual symbols and distinct groups.
• Duplicate Handling: Accidentally duplicated a symbol? The plugin detects identical names and sequentially numbers them for you (e.g., Symbol Copy 1, Symbol Copy 2), keeping your library conflict-free.
• Built-in Canvas Protection: We added a strict safety safeguard. The plugin will only execute if you are on a page explicitly named "Symbols". If you accidentally trigger the shortcut on a live design file or artboard, a native Sketch toast notification will gently remind you to switch pages, preventing any accidental disruption to your actual layouts.
• Auto Zoom & Center: Once the organization is complete, the plugin automatically recenters and zooms your camera to fit the newly generated grid on your screen.

How to Install and Use

Getting started with the Sketch Symbols Sorter is incredibly simple:

Installation:

1. Head over to our GitHub repository and download the latest release as a .zip file.
2. Unzip the folder and ensure it ends with the .sketchplugin extension.
3. Double-click the file to instantly install it into your Sketch app.

Usage:

1. Navigate to your dedicated Symbols page in Sketch.
2. Go to the menu bar: Plugins ➡️ Symbols Sorter ➡️ Organize & Sort Symbols.
3. A sleek configuration window will appear. Choose your Layout Direction, Group Space, and Spacing.
4. Click Organize and watch the magic happen! Your settings are saved locally, so your next cleanup is just a click away.
